CLX-3170 on Ubuntu 17.10 via LAN

Printer and scanner both work via LAN connection.

First, open a terminal and become root:
   sudo -i

Next, set up the repository:
   wget http://www.bchemnet.com/suldr/pool/debian/extra/su/suldr-keyring_2_all.deb
   dpkg -i suldr-keyring_2_all.deb
   echo "deb http://www.bchemnet.com/suldr/ debian extra"> /etc/apt/sources.list.d/samsungprinter.list
   apt-get update

Install required packages:
   apt-get install suld-driver-3.00.37 suld-configurator-2-qt4 xsane

The printer can now be installed via the Ubuntu printer config tool, simply press "Add". It is found atomatically by mDNS. The driver should read "...SPL-C", if not this can be changed via "Additional Printer Settings" ... right click ... "Properties"

The scanner is not found by the netdiscovery tool, and therefore can't be configured via the Samsung Configurator,  but it was possible to make it work by adding the IP address of the printer to the config file manually:
   pico /etc/sane.d/xerox_mfp.conf

Search for "3170" by pressing CTRL+W and entering "3170", then edit as follows:
   #Samsung CLX-3170 Series: Samsung CLX-3170fn & CLX-3175FW
   #usb 0x04e8 0x342a
   tcp 172.30.50.1

...of course this should be the IP address of your printer ;-). Close the editor with CTRL+X.
