You're right! It was a USB problem. A change of position for the printer was all that was needed.

Thanks a million.

Sorry for the long delay in replying.

The printer isn't listed under local printers in either the KDE CUPS frontend or in the CUPS web interface either.

Printing / Unable to add printer (CLX-3305fn)
May 09, 2013, 04:41:02

I've updated to the new suld drivers, but my CLX-3305fn isn't being recognised.

I'm running Ubuntu 13.04, with KDE. Using the configurator with the 4.00.39 driver offers no printers to select when the configurator loads initially. Clicking "Add" gives me the first dialog of the add printer wizard (do you want to add a printer?) after quite a long delay, but the wizard crashes when I click "Next".

Using the 4.01.17 driver and the newer configurator gets further in the add printer wizard (it doesn't crash, basically) but no local printers are found.

Any possible pointers greatly appreciated.

Brilliant. Thanks a million for your efforts here!

Hopefully that will sort things.

I'm rather pessimistic about this.

Upgrading to Ubuntu 13.04 this weekend has meant that my CLX-3305fn mfp is no longer detected. I've tried re-installing the drivers and even tried using an older kernel, but nothing I've tried so far works.

I've tried both the Samsung installer and the SULDR packages (purging between attempts). Currently have the packages installed. Same behaviour for both.

When trying to add a printer through either CUPS or with the Configurator no local printers are found (I've double and triple-checked the connections).

Not mfp files exist in /dev (e.g. /dev/mfp4), which means that manually adding all the details just results in failure to find any devices when I go to test.

Any pointers greatly appreciated.

Thanks very much for this.

Pinning the older version of cups-filters hasn't worked, unfortunately. Will look at reporting a bug on LaunchPad. When I get a chance I'll try rolling back to an earlier version of cups completely (and 13.04 is on the horizon of course).

Thanks again.

Thanks very much for the reply. Yeah - from reading a few things around it does sound like it might be a CUPS bug (I'm running 1.6.1).

Adobe reader can't print either, but at least this time I have an error to work with:

/usr/local/bin/lpr.app not found

I tried installing the pdf-fix package, as well as anything not "legacy" that mentioned lpr (in some desperation).

No joy though.

Printing / Can't print pdfs from CLX-3305fn

I posted a previous thread where I noted that after a kernel update things seemed to be working perfectly.

Spoke too soon.

On Ubuntu 12.10 running the latest drivers from the repos here. The test page and documents from LibreOffice and other prorgams print fine. However, pdfs and ps files won't print at all. They don't seem to enter the queue and CUPS doesn't list them as jobs at all (completed or otherwise).

I've tried printing from a few different programs (Okular, eVince, xpdf) to no avail. I've also tried converting pdf to ps (via print-to-file), but the ps files won't print either.

What little I've got from Google on people with similar issues in the past seems to be along the lines of "hard luck", but if there are any settings or adjustments I might make to get this working I'd be very grateful for suggestions.

Current (working) kernel version on Ubuntu 12.10 is .3.5.0-25.31 (64-bit)

I'm not absolutely certain on the previous, non-working, version, but it seems likely it was 3.5.0-25.30 (64-bit).

I know very little about these updates, so I can't be sure. The updates were released within just a couple of days of each other in the past week - I can't seem to find a simple record of what was released when easily though. These would have been from official Ubuntu update repos.

And it looks like it was a kernel issue. Another update this morning fixed things perfectly.

Printing / [SOLVED] CLX-3305fn not detected
February 21, 2013, 08:47:53
Hi,

I've installed the up-to-date drivers from the repository and have a CLX-3305fn connected by USB to a box running Ubuntu 12.10.

Trying to add a printer either through the Configurator or through CUPS gives no detected local printers. If I try configuring manually it accepts the settings, and printing produces no errors, but CUPS sees the printer as constantly "paused" and no printing actually happens.

Testing the configuration from within the Configurator produces the error:
Can't find any devices on /dev/mfp4

This isn't surprising as /dev/mfp4 (or any /dev/mfp) doesn't exist.

I fear this is a kernel issue because I was able to print (and even scan, if inconsistently) yesterday before a software update. I was running the official drivers yesterday but removed them when trying to fix the problem today after I came across this repo, before installing the repository drivers.

Any help greatly appreciated.
