SCX-4521F scanner (Mint 14 & Mint15)
« on: November 02, 2013, 04:53:15 »
Hello!
I have Samsung SCX-4521F printer/scanner and I am unable to make scanner work on Linux Mint 15. I would really like if someone could find some time and help me with it.
I have added bchemnet repository and installed Samsung unified driver 4.01.17. After installation I can print with my printer, but the scanner doesnít work. It looks like my PC doesnít recognise it.
I tried installing suld-scanner-usblp-fix but with no effect. Also Samsung Configurator doesnít recognise scanner. No luck with xsane and simplescan also. (XSane -> no devices available)
scanimage --format=tiff > test.tiff did move the scanning head so I hope there is still hope in making it work in Linux again.
I have also tried installing samsung unified driver 4.00.39 from AUR in my Manjaro Linux, but with no luck.
To test hardware fault I have tried scanning in Windows Seven, and in Windows scanner works nicely so I guess itís not hardware fault.

So if there is some good soul here that would help me make my scanner work again on Linux I would greatly appreciate it.

Here is my lsusb output:

Here is sane-find-scanner output (And also sane-find-scanner -f output)
# sane-find-scanner

  # sane-find-scanner will now attempt to detect your scanner. If the
  # result is different from what you expected, first make sure your
  # scanner is powered up and properly connected to your computer.

  # No SCSI scanners found. If you expected something different, make sure that
  # you have loaded a kernel SCSI driver for your SCSI adapter.

  # No USB scanners found. If you expected something different, make sure that
  # you have loaded a kernel driver for your USB host controller and have setup
  # the USB system correctly. See man sane-usb for details.

  # Not checking for parallel port scanners.

  # Most Scanners connected to the parallel port or other proprietary ports
  # can't be detected by this program.

Here is scanimage -L output
# scanimage -L

I'm assuming from your post that the scanner worked in Mint 14, or at least at some earlier time?  If so and you are using the same drivers, the problem is probably related to some other system change and a bug report with Mint would be more appropriate.

The scanner cleary is recognized, just not responding to programs.  This can often be due to the particular USB port in use.

Otherwise I don't have any immediate suggestions.

See http://www.linuxquestions.org/questions/linuxquestions-org-member-success-stories-23/samsung-scx-5635fn-mfp-the-scanner-4175467854/ for a solution for a different printer.

Based on the listing for Samsung, I added the following lines to the config file /etc/sane.d/xerox_mfp.conf

#Samsung SCX-4521F
usb 0x04e8 0x3419

The scanner is now seen and scanning works properly
