Hi all,
I have this very strange problem.
If I run sane-find-scanner I get no results for my SCX-4600 MFP. However I can use xsane and scanimage to scan and they find the scanner just fine.
Do you have any idea what am I missing? I am using Ubuntu 14.04 server with suld-driver2-1.00.06 and this is the output of the commands:
sudo sane-find-scanner

  # sane-find-scanner will now attempt to detect your scanner. If the
  # result is different from what you expected, first make sure your
  # scanner is powered up and properly connected to your computer.

  # No SCSI scanners found. If you expected something different, make sure that
  # you have loaded a kernel SCSI driver for your SCSI adapter.

  # No USB scanners found. If you expected something different, make sure that
  # you have loaded a kernel driver for your USB host controller and have setup
  # the USB system correctly. See man sane-usb for details.

  # Not checking for parallel port scanners.

  # Most Scanners connected to the parallel port or other proprietary ports
  # can't be detected by this program.

and

scanimage -L
device `smfp:usb;04E8;3433;Z2VCBFAZ301086L' is a SAMSUNG SCX-4600 Series on USB Scanner

Any help is appreciated.

Thanks

I agree that this is strange.  However, what exactly is the problem you are having as a result of sane-find-scanner not finding the scanner, if the other tools work?

Hi, I want to use a 3rd party software that is using the sane interface to access the scanner and since sane do not see the scanner so does the software. I am really confused because xsane is working and scanimage as well. However the sane daemon and any software that uses sane as backend cannot see the scanner.
I thought it might be some permissions problem so I looked at udev rules and any other permissions I could think of, but nothing helped.
Is there some other diagnostic command or some logs that I can increase to see what is going on exactly?

Thanks for your time.

Update: I've executed sane-find-scanner with some debug options SANE_DEBUG_DLL=128  SANE_DEBUG_SANEI_USB=4 sane-find-scanner on and this is what I got:

[sanei_usb] sanei_usb_init: found libusb-1.0 device (0x04e8/0x3433) interface 0 at libusb:003:002
[sanei_usb] store_device: add dn 1 with libusb:003:002

So the device is found by libusb, but nothing is done with it afterwards.

This sounds like something that should perhaps be filed as a bug with the SANE project, or at least posted in a forum more focused on that project in particular.  What you are describing sounds like a bug in one of the libraries - possibly only for Samsung devices, but still a bug in that project.

You may be right. I tried the same MFP on another computer with ubuntu 13.10 and the problem was the same. I will post it in the SANE project's forum to see what will they say. Thanks
