Got my new multifunction printer working straight away thanks to this repository.

I installed just the basic packages:
#aptitude install samsungmfp-data samsungmfp-driver-install samsungmfp-scanner

I already had CUPS running on my box and, when I went to add printer, there was "Samsung SCX-483x 5x3x Series" in the driver list. Installed it and printed a test page. Astonishingly easy in fact. It is USB connected and I haven't tested out network printing, for example, because that's not a priority for me in my setup. Print is fine, duplexing works, Yet to test scanning but will add a note here when I do.

The Samsung materials were little use, sadly. The CD isn't even readable on my machine, I couldn't access the user guide but I found a copy on the web (http://www.manualslib.com/manual/201813/Samsung-Scx-4833fd-User-Manual.html), and for Linux installation they say to download a driver from the Samsung website, but it isn't there for this model. I wondered for a while whether to call them and see if I could get any assistance, But after reading around I guessed that using this repository would be a better bet. I'm happy that I did.

A great resource, thanks to all involved. Let's hope manufacturers take notice of efforts like this.

Update - I've tested scanning now and it works.

I have used the SANE backend and found it works using the xerox_mfp driver. Here's what I did:

(1) ran sane-find-scanner, which checks that the printer can be detected and gives info on vendor and model codes:
found USB scanner (vendor=0x04e8 [Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd.], product=0x344b [SCX-483x 5x3x Series]) at libusb:002:009

(2) I added the following lines to /etc/sane.d/xerox_mfp.conf because this model was not included there but some very similar-sounding ones were, so I thought I would see if it worked:
# Samsung SCX-4833FD
usb 0x04e8 0x344b

(3) I made sure my username was added to the lp group (so I don't have to be root to scan), placed a document on the flatbed and tested scanning by running:
scanimage >scantest.pnm

This was successful. Great! By the way, for anyone's reference, I'm running debian wheezy on this machine.

Thanks for sharing.  I'll add this scanner information whenever I do the next update.
